Default Need info on Duramax!!!

I would like all the info you guys could give me on this motor.

What trucks does GM offer it in?

How is it with pulling enclosed trailers and heavy equipment. (probley good)

What mods would you do right away?

Is propane a reliable way to make a lot of pulling power?

how much can you turn up the boost?

How much can you gain from exhaust?

is it loud in the truck? the motor?

Can you hear the turbo?

What would you recommend?

all info needed. Thanks

Joe

I don't know **** about Duramax except it has a turbo and takes diesel fuel.

LOL! It takes a little more than that to get a 6,300+ lb truck into the 13's.

The D-Max is RPO LB7 and was a joint venture between GM and Isuzu. It has common rail direct injection system, Deep skirt block design, fracture split alloy connecting rods, oil spray piston cooling, and integral oil cooler.

Chevy and GMC 3500 chassis cabs
Chevy and GMC fullsize vans
Chevy and GMC Medium duty 4500's

Cummins and the new 6.0L Powerstroke are all new for '03 and are stiff competition, but they're all so even now, that it really comes down to which truck you like better. Also when upgrading to the D-Max, your only transmission of choice if you have the LT package is the Allison 1000 series 5 spd automatic. If you get a base trim or bench seat equipped LS, you can get the 6 speed manual.

Here is a link to a site recently done by farmers putting the top 2500 and 3500 trucks through their paces.

Uncork it. Put a new intake, chip (there are now a few out), then do a cat-back system for it. There really isn't anything like bigger turbo's or intercoolers yet available but they are soon coming.

The D-Max is a diesel. In order to have a CNG ready motor you have to have specific valves and other hardware compatible with propane burning. As of now, I think only the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 have CNG options from GM.

I haven't seen any before and after dyno sheets though. I'd say just as much if not more than it's gas equivalents because of the forced induction.

It's soo quiet some people mstake it for a gas motor at idle. Unless you listen real closely and hear the diesel pinging.

quote:
Can you hear the turbo?

OH YEA!! Under full spool!

quote:
What would you recommend?

Not sure what you're asking here. Keep in mind, checking off RPO LB7 is a $4,500 upgrade over and above the truck and chassis itself. This is in part because now you get a dual battery system (24v) and other hardware needed to support a diesel. The cost of the Allison is chopped down considerably when ordering either the D-Max or Vortec 8100. The question you have to ask yourself is, "Are you gonna tow enough and with enough weight to foot that $4,500 upgrade?" The slight edge the D-Max has in fuel efficiency over the 496 gasser may not add up until a couple years down the road. Add to that, that diesel isn't available at every corner gas station.

If you tow infrequently, and use it as general transport, I would NOT recommend the D-Max and would suggest either the Vortec 6000 (in a 2500, 2500HD, or 3500) or upgrade to the Vortec 8100 (2500HD and 3500 only) gas motors. If the truck will have a heavier trailer hitched up 5 days a week or plan on doing a lot of cross country pulling, then I'd go D-Max.

if you want maximum performance from your duramax...or have any questions at all, you should contact Quad Boenker at Quadzilla Diesel Technologies. 1-888-842-6572, or on the web at www.quadzillapower.com, Quad is a good guy and knows his stuff on those diesels. later.

Dude, propane injection will work on diesels without adding spark plugs, it is done all of the time. And if you don't belive you can put a 5-6000 pounds Duramax into 13's with $1500 or less of mods you can ask anyone here, there is a guy here who did it.

A) It's not a option from GM to put propane on diesels. Why spend $4,500 from GM for the diesel only to convert it. What you can do aftermarket is irrelevant, you can't do it from GM.

B) If it's the red one, that's not a DuraMax, that's a Vortec 6000 on a big bottle of giggle gas.

Also, a DuraMax equipped 2500HD or 3500 truck is going to weigh more than 6,000lbs. Mine is only extended cab 4x4 short bed and it tips the scales at 6,400lbs. Going 2WD would drop some weight but adding a crew cab or 8ft bed will keep it well over 6,000lbs.

Mine with the Vortec 8100 only runs mid 16's in the 1/4 and the D-Max's are only a few ticks quicker stock. Either way, pushing that much weight with the aerodynamics of a box 3 - 3.5 seconds faster is gonna require A LOT of boost especially with the Allison. Allison's rob A LOT of power and are not drag race performance minded in their shift patterns. Simple physics is what it boils down too!

propane is to a diesel as n20 is to gas
right?

the duramaximizer seems to be a good choice for a 'chip'
adjustable from 0-200 something hp gain....

That I'm not sure of, but I do know that our Propane forklifts always ran hot. But I do not no if that was from increased compression forces or what.

as far as mods chech out what banks offers they offer a kit with chip and new turbin and exhaust for ford and that is supost to be like night and day. the kits are not as cheep as putting propane but you would have the power all the time.
look here banks power
