Default Need help on 2005 5.3 for towing

I am helping a friend out and need to know what does everyone recomend for a CAI and programmer that is tow friendly? The truck is a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2wd 5.3 automatic, crew cab short bed. He has the GU5 and G80 which from what i have gathered is 3.23 gears and LSD. I recomended 4.10 gears for him and keep the G80. What about a throttle body, exhaust, etc. He does not want or need a loud exhaust just something better flowing. Thanks in advance.

Weight and wind resistance are the critical factors, for less than 5000 lbs and an open trailer--car or boat--it is not a problem in stock form. Minimum axle ratio is 3.73. Pull a heavier load and you need to start looking at options. These include transmission upgrades--vette servo and billit 3-4 at a minimum, trans and engine tuning, etc. With an enclosed trailer pulling a race car and gear, and the like a supercharger/turbo would really help. Terrain is another factor, pulling in Ohio, Indiana and the like you can get away with less and in mountain states you need high horsepower and beefed trans and tuning. Most hand held tuners will get you a generic tune that may or may not be better. When I had one I found that, with CAI and headers, the truck worked better in the stock tune rather than the hand held towing tune. That was verified by running a high dollar scanner at 40 fps and analyzing the engine functions. Again this is just the beginning of what you can do....good luck and use the search function for lots of information on what you want to do.

He uses it to tow a 28 foot long camper weighing about 6000lbs. He just wants some more pulling power for it. Buying a Diesel truck is out of the question for him.

get some 4.10 gears, CAI, magnaflow muffler, and custom tune. have the tow haul button set up for holding gears longer and higher converter lockup.

look at one of our tuners to the right >>>>>>

Not sure if funds are limited, but at least beef up the transmission with:

- Tranny cooler (Tru-Cool 40K)
- Servo(s) (at least the Vette servo and a billet 4th servo)
- Shift kit (TransGo HD2)
- Separator plalte (TransGo hardened plate)
- Accumulator pistons (Sonnax pinless)

He didn't say spacer. I'm thinking he meant a ported and polished TB.

Yes ported and polished I know the spacers are best used as a paper weight.

How much weight are you looking at towing? My RWD 05 Extended Cab 5.3L 3.23 gear truck didn't have any problems towing 5500#
