Well, I've decided that a cam swap is really too much for me to take on right now. I just can't see spending all that $$$ for a 25-50hp gain.
I was wondering what suggestions anyone might have as to what direction I should take with the mods (check sig for current mods.) Should I continue with motor bolt-ons? Should I consider drivetrain mods (gear/converter/shift kit)?
And, by the way, I just ordered some electric fans! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I've never heard of a cam alone picking up something 25-50hp. Wow thats cheap hp you better do it next if you are going to get that from a cam alone. I would look more towards 10-20 tops out of the cam. But for the money spent it is still one of the best additions. That is a real power maker, not like ELECTRIC FANS...lol

Our 9.5:1 CR makes it much harder to get the 25+ RWHP gains seen in the F and Y bodies with cam only changes. Dynamic compression changes with higher duration cams and combined with the effects of low CR tend to give you diminishing results.

if i put in a cam and got 10-20 i would be pissed.
bigtex(richard) put in the ls6 cam and gained ~30rwhp. a few others have had similar gains with this cam.
another guy put in the 212/218 cam with a gain of something like 42rwhp.
now with raised compression you would gain alot more, but we can still have respectable gains with our low compression ratios

Yessir, I stuck myself with the lowly 4.8! I've added my sig to the post so you can see what I've done so far.
I work at a speed shop on the weekends, and was looking at the Comp Cams 412-11 (212/218, .522 lift and 114 LSA) but my cost on the cam is a little over $300, and the springs are around $125. Add in installation, and it gets to be a little expensive!
I know that there is no such thing as "free" horsepower, but I am on a budget and want to maximize my "mod money." I just wanted to see from people with experience what works and what doesn't, and maybe which direction I should move in. Thanks for all of the help guys!

ahh yes, forgot he had a 4.8L if you were going for a cam i would say a 206/212 112lsa comp grind. better for low end performance which our 4.8Ls need and you can use ls6 valve springs to save money (525 or lower lift).
but i definatly would go for all the bolt ons first. headers and what not, change to 3.73s and a posi or locker. all that stuff
