My dad has a 99 5.3 z71 totally stock with about 100k miles on it and lately it has been wasting gas like crazy we took it to the valley this weekend and it was averaging about 10 miles to the gallon on the highway with 93 octane does anyone know what could be wrong ?

Try doing a basic tune up as sometimes that can cause a huge effect on your mpg. intake, pcv valve, etc etc. Try running some Seafoam before the tuneup too.

Just my opinion, change the fuel filter, intake filter. fuel filter is bout 15 bucks and takes 10 min if that. stock air filter maybe 30 bucks, about the same in install. I think those helped me out a bit. I'm at 160,000.

There are a few that have done it. Not all that hard if you have a welder handy to weld them back up after emptied. I was gonna do it to mine but ended up buying new LT headers with an ORY so I didn't need to.

On a side note the material in those cats is worth a bunch of money too the recyclers who extract the precious metals out of them. So you might want to just whack them off and replace them with some pipe or Jegs has an ORY that will bolt right up!
