Default MPG.... 8.1 vs. Duramax

Hopefully someone here can help... here's the deal:

My old man is in the market for a 3500 EC 2WD Dually, his dilema is "real world gas milege" (ie. towing a fifth wheel trailer). Since the diesel adds approx. $5000 to the price of the truck, he was wondering if it would pay off in the long run, like 8-10 yrs. What are you seeing for gas mileage while towing a hefty payload? What's the average difference between the 8.1L and the Duramax?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I dont have either, but know several that do.. I am going to say there will be about a 6-7 mpg difference when towing, but lets see some real #'s from owners... I am curious of actual's myself..

It would be very benificial to know the "normal" driving mileage also, since its also a very big spread..

Touchy subject!!!

this one could get ugly fast.

Gassers vs Diesel heads.

But heck what I do know I own a "lame-A@#" 500ci big block chevy.

But really, It just boils down to personal(one who makes the payment) wants, need, likes, dislikes, and perference. Me right now, buy brand new -Dmax.

8.1 right now has 4 cats on it(why it was derated for HP)and on its way out of production. to make way for a LSx series based V10.

i know about 3 guys here from work that had the 8.1 and sure enough they went and traded them for the duramax.. they say the 8.1 does its job but it is just terrible on gas,, and they are way to happy now with the duramax, in the past 2 yrs. there are about 8 guys from work that have bought a duramax and they said it is well worth the $.... that's my .02cents
