modding the tstat is really easy and it works. I have it done on my truck.

to do it... just take off the thermostat, i think its only 2 10mm bolts (10mm??).

Next, push down on the thermostat untill the spring is down and you can twist it either way so that the thermostat will "pop off" the thermostat housing (there are springs on the inside.)

After this place a BB or something around that size in the little hole in the center of the inside of the thermostat housing which you will see once you remove the thermostat.

after this reassemble the thermostat and reinstall it on your truck and your finished.

do a search on the topic and see if you can find a picture from a while back that shows it a little more.

hope this helps

well seems to be a pretty cheap way to get a 160 stat compared to 50bucks for a hypertech......

I can't tell any differance in performance since installation of 160* therm., exept that my trk. runs 180*. The install was easy, only problem was getting the hose off the old thermostat. The chevy techs say it is designed to run @ 210* but I'm use to seeing 180*, you know "old dog new trick". So far the best improvement I've achieved for the $$$ is the airraid filter settup. good hunting

this really shouldnt be thought of as a performance mod per say. More of a safety mod that allows for other modification that DO infact increase performance. Cooler Engine = Less Detonation = Allow For More Timing = More Power . but yeah, if you just change the tstat your not going to feel any change in power. I did it so that i could run more timing on ls1 edit, which gave me a few more ponys

Hypertech increases timing a little as well if you tell it you have a 160* tstat.

thank you! thank you!

scary, a year ago i didnt know jack about performance. haha "wow! i can get 10hp from a tornado and a tb spacer!" but.. thankfully, nothing to do in collge + tech boards yeild lotsa good learning! heh

greg, u could always sell your hypertech on ebay, even if its only for like 25-30 bucks still better than not getting 25-30bucks for keeping the same thing. but then again, for 25-30 bucks, i would probably leave it on due to lazyness. haha

or... you could tweak those two to be 160* tstats, start making it sound REALLY hard to mod to them, and sell them both for 30bucks haha j/k

Or - Sell the "mod your own thermostat" info sheet on ebay for $9.99. Take paypal, then just send the buyer a PDF of the mod.

GM runs all their vehicles as close to 210 as possible for emissions purposes. A hotter engine burns off more hydrocarbons and other stuff.
