Default Mileage w/ 6.0 Crew cab 4x4

I am looking at buying a new truck since GM has come out with their new deal. I have tried a search, but no luck on my question.

What are folks getting for mileage on a stock (at least relatively) 6.0 crew cab 4x4 w/ 3.73 gears. Same question applies for those with a 5.3l crew (you can get a 5.3 in a crew can't you?). Presently I have a '97 1500 GMC Z71 extended cab w/ 350 in it and I am getting 14 in the city and 16-17 on the highway.

I am looking for something will a little bit more zip and to be able to tow my car trailer (loaded weight is 7,000 lbs). I want to at least get what I am getting now for mileage, if not a little better.

Also can some one tell me the difference between a 1500HD and a 2500HD. I have noticed at the dealer both have the heavy duty 8 lug axles, so.....what's the difference, leaf springs?

Thanks in advance.

My dad have a '04 2500 which is the same as a 1500HD. Its a crew cab, 6.0L, 4x4 and he drives very conservatively and gets 13-14 mpg TOPS. It is NOT zippy and the mileage will be worse when towing of course. I know one the main differences between the 1500dh/2500 and the 2500hd is the frame is big all the way back on the 2500hd. Take a look at it. 2500hd's also have 4:10s in the 6.0L and a bigger exhaust all the way back. I think they also went back to the "powerbulge" hood for 05 in the 2500hd's. There are probably more differences too.

Sounds like the more you make it breathe the more efficient it gets. I wonder why the 6.0 fuel mileage is like that. I have a '03 Yukon XL 4x4 w/ the 5.3 and it gets 18-19 on the highway, with 3.73's. Around town is 14-14.5. I wouldn't think 35 more cubes would make such a big difference. I am guessing a crew cab weighs about the same as my Yukon XL (5200+), but maybe I am wrong.

The crew cab 2500HDs weighs in at well over 5500lbs if a 4x4. With all kinds of gear it gets worse.

The best thing you can do is get a custom tune . I picked up about 3mpg on the highway, damn near that in town, a definite mpg boost across the board.

Plus all the added power .

Dont forget electric fans. They help, I know the 05's come with them, not sure about HD's though. got to compare apples to apples. I picked up 2-3mpg with mine on my 5.3

Get the 6.0 and a Nelson tune, That should bump the power and mpg up. My best was 19 mpg on the hwy with acetone in the tank 17 mpg without it.
