No, they do not put "LS1" engines in the trucks from the factory. The LS1 was the first Generation III produced for Chevy in the 97 C5 Vette. Then introduced in the F-body in 98. Then In 99 the new Gen III engines came out in the trucks and in 00 the SUV's. They are considered "based" on the LS1, but are really part of the "new" design. Most of the parts for the LS1 and other Gen III V8 "Truck" engines will interchange (except for the 8.1). Some a direct bolt on replacement, and some with minor modifications. Bore and stroke sizes are different, crank lengths can be different, heads are different but will bolt to any of the blocks (97 & 98 heads have a perimiter bolt valve cover).

Vortec 4800 (LR4)
Vortec 5300 (LM7, LM4, L59)
Vortec 6000 (LQ4)
Vortec HO 6000 (LQ9)

There are guys with LS1's in trucks, but not from the factory. Oh yea, there is a 5.7 that comes in vans until last year, but that is still the old TBI design, not a gen III engine. The 8.1 is also not the same design as the Gen III. Parts are not interchangable with the 8.1 and of course the 6 and 4 cylinders. The name "Vortec" comes from the head design. Pre Gen III engines that are called Vortec, are that only because the head design which are still different from the Gen III heads.
