No ls6 cam. It needs to be from a gen III engine not a Gen IV otherwise the swap isn't worth it(costs too much money).

The first gen ls6 cam is the same as the LS2 cam. Thinking of doing this since I have my stock LS2 cam sitting in the garage.

But doesn't the LS2 cam have the cam sensor on the gear and not on the cam like the earlier LS engines? So you'd have to do the cam, cam gear, timing cover, cam sensor, and extend the cam sensor wires....with all that dough you could have gotten a decent aftermarket cam and springs.

Incorrect. As Billy said, the ls2 is a gen IV cam whereas the LS6 cam is a gen III. Like he said, it can be made to work, but by the time you spend the money on the extra parts it negates the cost effectiveness of the cam itself.

Just make sure you get a real LS6 cam and not a reground copy of one.

The cam stick itself? If that was true then why would gen III cams work easily on gen IV motors?

The front and rear of the Gen III and GenIV cams are different.

Gen III engines get their cam signal from the rear of the motor, while Gen IV motors get it from the front by way of the Cam timing gear. To get a Gen IV cam to work in a Gen III motor, you must use a GenIV front timing cover, a GenIV Cam gear, and extend the wires for the connector of your stock harness.

Buying a Gen III cam for a Gen III motor is obviously the smarter idea because it will slide right in. Why you would want to throw in another stock cam, especially one that is going to cost you more money buying new components to throw on it to get it to work, is beyond me. Get an 02 LS6 cam if you want to stay with something cheap, or spend a big more on a better cam/spring/pushrod setup.

Does anyone have pics of a Gen III cam? I can post up some of the stock ls2 to compare. Still wondering why you can put a cam from a ls1 application into a ls2.

You can put a GENIII cam into a GENIV much easier since the GENIV gets it's cam sensor signal off of the gear, while GENIII cams have a lobe ground into them for the cam sensor at the rear of the block. There are pics floating around here somewhere (maybe the internal engine section).
