How does the LS naming convention work? I almost always hear every GM V8 in our trucks referred to as an LS1 i guess as in LS1 Genration? But, in like my case have 2003 Truck is it an LS1 or like an LS2, LS3, etc ,etc…??? I am getting some custom badges made and don’t want to advertise the wrong thing. LoL
Thanks Guys!

But its not a LS1. A LS1 is gm engine designation code for the all aluminum 5.7L motor in the F-bodys and Vettes. The code for the 5.3 is like said above, a LM7. That's proper terminology
The badge does look cool BTW, but you need to swap in a LS1 (5.7) to be accurate.

Here is the naming convention for GM engines:
Lxx:
L code = RPO engine catagory
xx code = next sequential designation (no rhyme or reason, it is just issued the next alpha/numeric characters)
If you look in your glove box, you will see a list of three character alpha/numeric codes. Find the code that starts with L, that is your engine code and states what engine you have. Each of those codes represents what option your truck came with, example: Z codes are suspension aka: Z71, Z88, ZO6, Z28, ZR1, etc ...
The reason why all Gen3 engine, and also Gen4 engines are referred to as LS1 or LSx is due to the fact that the LS1 (debut in the 1997 Y-Body) was the first, in a long series of next generation engines to come. Hence the auto industry nicknamed all the proceeding Gen3 platform engines either LS1 style/type or LSx ... notice the small x, LSX is the GMPP new block, capable of supporting 500 CID. Truthfully, these engine should be called Gen3 (1997-2004) or Gen4 (2005+).
