Default LQ4 piston to bore clearance

Are they the same for the other iron blocks (lm7/5.3) or the ls1? If not, does anyone have the spec?

Is there anyway to measure this without removing the piston? I got a shortblock that had been line honed and new rings put on the used pistons and they seem a little loose in the bore to me.

Piston is smaller in diameter at the top and around all the ring lands. The piston to wall clearance is measured at the center or torward the top of the skirt. If you are looking at the top of the piston in the cyl it may look like you have .020 of clearence.

Thanks Randy!

mj... That helps although the piston has a bit of play in the bore. Should I be able to move it around much with my hand?

Yeah, if the rings are all oiled up really well(which they should) you could move it. If it makes you feel better take it to another shop and have them mic the cyl. It should be no more than .003-.005" larger than what it is supposed to be(stock bore?).
