Regarding locking diffs:

The GM 10 bolt axles are basically the same layout as a Jeep Dana 35 with C-clips. There are basically 2 kinds of full blown lockers, the kind that replace the spider gears (Lock-Right, E-Z Locker) and the kind that replace the carrier (Detroit locker, ARB air lockers, Eaton electric lockers). Not to mention there are several baddass limited slip diffs out there.

All of the above can be installed by a shade tree mechanic, but the ones that replace the carrier are harder because they require shimming and the pressing on and off of bearings. The ones that replace the spiders gears (assuming you have an open diff now) are easy as hell to do, but are not nearly as strong or quiet.

For a street truck, I'd recommend a tight limited slip because of it's smooth operation.

I don't know about your situation but I had a bone stock 1999 GMC 1500 Ext. Cab with the 5.3 and it went through 4 sets of U-joints, 1 rear, 1 transfer case, 1 snapped DS, 1 transmission, a few sets of tires here and there, and I am forgetting things but all the stuff listed happened in under 36k miles.
