Default Look what I found in my oil pan !

I pulled the motor last week on my truck. I am doing a cam swap and some head work. Motor is a LY5 with 60K miles. When I removed the oil pan I heard something metallic rattling around inside. WTF? I pulled it out and it looked like a main bearing. After looking a little closer it was part of the timing chain tensioner that was broken. I never had any noise or symptoms of a problem. When the new cam go's in I have upgraded to the Iwis chain and the LS2 tensioner.

It looks like the entire assembly could have come apart. Might be a good thing you took it apart when you did! Your chain and gear look to be in pretty good condition for the mileage.

Would the LS2 wedge dampener be a worthwhile mod on an 03 LQ9 while doing the build? I'd have to drill and tap holes in the block correct? Does the dampener keep tension on the chain to help keep cam timing more consistent?

Its primarily designed to eliminate the chain whip that occurs under RPM fluctuations. This whip is apparently what breaks chains.
