Default lifter noise?

i have been tearing into my 5.3L looking for my "knock". i have found that all rod bearings and mains are good. valves are in place and springs are not broke. could i have a failed lifter causing a hard knocking sound and a engine misfire? how can i tell if my lifters are good?

basically just pull them. i had one lifter completely destroy itself and on the roller on the bottom broke in half, basically causing it to look like a flat bottom, losing some lift, both causing a missfire. in both cases i could move the rocker arm a little, it was almost as if it wasnt torqued down but it really was. it actually chewed up my cam lobe too, so the cam had to be replaced. id pull the heads look at the lifters and check the cam. took me about 2-3 days workin 8-4 on my 06, also no expierence doing it before. it almost ruined my lifter passage, i had to hone it out a little to make it smooth again. catch it before it ruins something else, i learned that the hard way. lol

it wasnt the lifters. somehow i destroyed the tops of 3 pistons and the heads. something ended up in the combustion chambers.
