I am still haveing tons of what I believe is 'false knock' after my heads/cam install. By taking the advice of a know tunner, I unplugged my knock sensors. That took care of the part throttle KR (with no audible detonation) but when ever I hit PE mode, I get an instant 8* KR and it dosnt move. How is the PCM deciding there is knock when then knock sensors are unplugged?? Is there a built-in safe mode, or is this delta burst knock?
btw... here is a log file of it LOG FILE

Geez ... I dunno what the heck it could be then. Maybe try removing or disabling the burst knock, yes, burst knock, not delta knock. I didn't think it showed up as KR though.

Im not sure if this has anything to do with whats happening to you but...
I had the same problem with my 00 4.8. I would see 8 deg of knock for no reason, I figured it was my hypertech tune.
Once I got a new PCM and different tune in there it all went away. I think there was a memeber with a 99 that had the same problem and fixed it similarly
I think it has something to do with the 00 tune, because when I put a stock 6.0 tune from a 02 in my truck all the knock went away.

I'm still getting the phantom 8, or 9.1* of KR too. That's VERY VERY intersting that you're seeing that after unplugging the sensors.
From what I understood about burst knock, is that it's there to sort of do what an acellerator pump would do in a carbureted motor, but on the engine side of things. When it notices a change in tip-in, it adjusts the timing back a little for that fraction of a second during the tip-in of the throttle. It's not supposed to be logged as real KR.
BK, do you notice this:
I logged my knock counter. I was getting between 50 and 75 during normal driving. Every once in a while, the counter would go up above 80. Never into the 90's.
When I'm getting actual timing pulled from KR - the knock counter was anywhere from 60 to high 70's. When the knock counter was up above that range a few times - no KR happened to be logged. WTF?
It seems like there is some sort of "knock counter vs RPM vs load" table hidden in the VCM?

Seems I remember mine doing the same thing. What you need to do is unplug the KSs and then clear the codes or just clear it,then I bet you will get NO retard until the PCM figues out there is no KSs plugged in,even then it may not have a SES light but will start pulling timing,so clear it and try it.
