Default K&N drop in Vs. Stock paper filter

Hey guys,

I recently ordered an Airaid MIT and K&N drop-in filter for my truck (got the filter a few days ago, still waiting on the MIT). My concerns are this: After searching the forums it seems that the F-body guys really hate the K&N drop in filter and they suggest leaving the stock paper filter in. Their reasons seem to be fit, quality, and Oil carryover on the MAF.

After looking at my filter, fit and quality doesn't seem to be an issue for me, but I am concerned about oil and the MAF. How much of a problem is this? Is it not as bad with the drop-in vs. a cone style?

Basically, is the hp gain of the K&N drop-in filter in my setup going to be worth some of the possible problems that might occur with its usage (more dirt intake and oil on the MAF)? Or would it be wiser to leave the paper filter in... Or should I stop over thinking this issue and run the damn K&N?

Thanks

Jeff

i started with a drop in from K&N and never had an issue. granted, you and I aren't using the same one, but if you are worried about excess oil, lay some paper towels down and let the filter bleed through to it.

The K&Ns work fine and still flo wbetter than a dirty papaer filter. Simply don't over oil it and you'll be fine. If you are worried about the oil, just lightly oil it then after a few days of heavy footed driving check your MAF and clean it carefully if needed. You'll be good for another 10k miles LOL

Some folks just set their filter up on its side for a few days to insure that any excess oil willdrain off of it. I ran the exact setup you are installing for quite some time with no problems.

Yeah, the K&N will work fine. Just don't put too much oil on it. This should be obvious.

I think the K&N replacement filter is fine also and the stock airbox even flows good but that damn stock tube going to the throttle body is where I think the real restriction is at.

best way to absolutely ruin a k&n filter. If you have used compressed air on your filter you should seriously think about buying another one. DO NOT used compressed air. it rips the cotton guaze the filter is made out of. I personally oil mine and wrap it in a shop towel to drain overnight. next morning unwrap and install. No problems yet and I have been running the same filter for 5 years
