Well guys I bought a 92 454 ss real cheap. I plan on doing heads, cam, intake, nitrous and a better fuel system. I need to know who has the best heads on the market for these truck and also what cam to go with? Any help would be cool. BTW: Im new to the big block engines.
Thanks in advance

I used to own one of those! I bought a '90 a few years ago and traded it in on my Z-28. What color is yours? They made @16k and over 13K of those were black '90 models so if you have a red or white one it should have added collector value. Any way I had the entire Edelbrock performer package and it sounded/felt great but the quarter mile times were terrible compared to the newer LS derived trucks...(mid 15's), but it looked awesome. engine bay was ALL billet. Back then I got alot of good info on 454ss.com good luck w/ the project!

Thanks for the advice. The truck now has headers and runs 15.50's. Yes it is black. I hope to get it running 11's with some good heads, cam, intake, fuel system, 3500 stall, and 200 shot TNT.
454ss.com? Ill check it out!

They respond well to simple mods. My 90' had Doug Thorley long tubes, Jet chip, no cats, dual exhaust, and flipped the air cleaner lid and right off the freeway in summer heat I ran 14.7 (Don't remember the mph). I was on 17' tires so traction was not the best and I let my buddy drive it the rest of the night for practice since he was buying it but still not bad considering these things are dogs stock.

With your proposed mods 11's should be piece of cake

Here is what it looked like after I/We finished it.

I understand the paint scheme is not to everyones taste, but it won lots of trophies for quality back in 94-99'.

Before you think about heads, cam, nitrous and the like think about lighter pistons, rods, and rockers.....these engines (Like ALL bigblocks) tend to self-destruct at higher rpm's because of the incredibly heavy rotating mass, getting a BB to 5500rpm's is REALLY PUSHING IT on stock internals.
Also..the TBI fuel system on that thing is a DOG....consider the Edelbrock Pro-Flo EFI system as a first upgrade (you DO have to swap to (pre-86 or ANY performance type)Oval-Port heads to use the system but it IS worth it...the stock TBI is pretty much maxed out from the factory whereas the Pro-Flo system will support 650+hp
Good Luck....

The TBI setup does run pretty bad. We offer this complete big block port fuel kit (complete with intake, computer, and harness) which really makes a new engine out of it, responds better to mods, and works great with the stock heads!!

That's BEAUTIFUL John !!!....is that an OEM or Marine part that you have adapted to this application or is it a Speartech original casting ??...and is the same thing available for the smallblock TBI's ???

It's adapted from the 96-00 Vortec 454. We set it up with a different computer and harness so it's much more "user friendly". Since they never changed the bolt pattern on the big blocks, this will bolt on to any year of engine.
For the small blocks we've done a lot of TBI to TPI conversions, using the Camaro, Firebird, and Corvette TPI units from the mid 80's to early 90's.
