intake foam?

Default intake foam?

ive tried searching and cant get any current or definate anwsers on the purpose of the foam blocks or pads under the intake manifold. are they needed?

They keep leaves and dirt and mice and whatever out from under the intake.

I think they keep debris out, but I removed them so I could hose out under the intake when I clean my engine. And I figured removing them could help with circulation to keep the intake manifold cool, whereas the foam could contain heat from engine and heat the bottom of the intake. Haven't had them for 4+ years and no issues.

i leave them out so the knock sensors wont get Claustrophobia

No, the intent was to keep dirt and water away from the knock sensors. It failed miserably though as it also kept dirt and leaves and water ON the knock sensors.

every ones ive removed had a mountain of debris behind them.

ditto. i've pulled apart engines that looked show room clean. pull that manifold and find a mountain of compost.
