Default Installed Gibson Catback...Not Overly Impressed

Had my Gibson 3" single out catback put on today and I can honestly say I really don't like it.

First and foremost, at idle, the thing vibrates very badly. In neutral not as bad, but in drive the whole cabin shakes. I had this put on at a very good exhaust shop so I don't think install is any part of this. A bump in idle speed helps a bit but its still too obnoxious....
Overall SOTP difference seemed very negligible as well, but I am goin out right now to really whomp on the truck to see where/if it picked up any significant gains.

I might leave it on for a few days but I see myself taking it off pretty soon.

AHHH another satisfied Gibson customer. Some guys are happy, and some are not. For all the good testimonials I have heard on them, I have heard just as many on the bad side. I'm not flaming the satified customers, so don't get on the defensive. The single biggest reason I didn't go with them was a story I heard about this guy: He had bad vibration in his muffler, Gibson said send it back, the baffles inside were broken. This happen twice to this guy and the only way he got it warrantied was to pay all the shipping, uninstall, and reinstall charges. He said he spent about half as much in all the charges that the cost of the whole thing was. Let me add, this was on a pre 99 truck and have heard of at least one more person that had that problem.

Well, after about 40 miles of spirited highway driving the vibartion has mysteriously disappeared completely. Possibly the exhaust needed to settle in???

I still am not feeling any sort of gains though as I would expect, in fact, passing power at 40mph and 75mph has seemed to diminsih.

We'll see what happens over the next couple of days or so, right now I am kinda on the fence.

i have a 2000 gmc 5.3 and installed the cat back single, had no vibration problems. but not satisfied with the sound not loud enough but is a deep bellow like a quiet bigblock. i have had it on for about 1 year and seems to change tone a little over the time. i did have a good experience with a borla cat back on my 95 z28 though, i will be buying for now on. although i heard that installing headders makes the sound of the gibson diffenant.

i have the supertruck on mine, didnt really notice much difference in sound after i installed my hamms though. i did have a noticable sotp gain from it though. and it looks sweet!

but yeah... if i could do it again, i wouldnt go with gibson, or any other prefabbed exhaust for that matter. Personally i feel custom is the only good way to do an exhaust! its just too bad i didnt feel that way when i put on my exhaust

Well it seems as though Gibson has a 50/50 like/dislike ratio.

After some burn in time it'll mellow a little. I think Gibsons are too raspy.

You should go with the Magnaflow's like I did Tom.

Lane...

I think this was a nice wakeup call telling me to leave **** alone!

The truck was just fine bone stock. I should really learn to stop taking perfectly good vehicles and turning them into ****.

One positive thing that came out of this was it seems as if the trans shifts better now...if that's any consolation.

but yeah, i say i like the gibson but thats kindof biased because i have never had anything else but a flowmaster 70 series on the 92 sierra i had before and it was WAY too quiet!

I had a Gibson on my truck and I changed it because I wanted a different sound, I was tired of the Gibson. I got a PV muffler and I instantly noticed an improvement in throttle responce. I did not have any before/after dyno numbers, so I do not know for sure. I never had any problems with the Gibson, and it did seem to get louder the more miles you put on them. Kent.
