Do I need to do anything to my new oil pump before I install it? Jay

I always tip them upside down and pour oil in the pickup tube port, then rotate by hand until it pumps out. Use some thick oil though so it doesn't run out while you're installing it. I use bar and chain oil from my chainsaw. There's nothing wrong with having a little bit of it in your engine

what style engine are you working on, if it is an old style 5.7 I just fill the pump with clean oil and let the excess run out, if new style 5.3, 6.0...... same thing just give the pump a fresh coating of oil and spin it around a couple times then you are good to go
