Default Input on porting my LS2 87mm TB.

Putting together my new intake manifold setup to go on my RST. The truck has a LS1 swap and a P1SC. I will be running a Pro Flo XT intake and a LS2 TBSS 87mm throttle body. I already have the X-Link harness and have some time before the intake manifold is done getting painted, so I am going to port the throttle body. I have done a fair amount of porting in the past and it should be fairly easy job. Here is what I was planning to do. Mark the blade location and orientation and remove it and port and polish the t/b and knife edge and smooth the butterfly. I have never ported a DBW t/b before so I was wondering how close to the blade when it is vertical (fully closed) is everyone porting. How much does the blade open for normal idle operation, do you need to stay that distance away from the blade to allow a proper idle relearn after porting. Thanks for the help.

In this picture it looks like the tb was ported very close to the blade. Is this the correct way to port the tb.

honestly every time i tried to port a TB it ended up not idling right... I would stay away from touching the blade...

Ya thats what I am saying, I dont want to touch the plade or port in the range of the throttle blade on the t/b for idle.

last time i mess with it, i closed the blade and held it with a clamp/vise grip, and then ported from there... That way the blade remained in the exact same spot and the area the blade comes in contact was never touched... Alot safer and easier than removing it...

You are probably safe if you don't touch anything beyond the resting/spring-determined position of the blade, which is around 18% TP. It will be closed more than that at idle.

I always see ported throttle bodies for sale.....

Could it be because of idling problems induced by porting? I know I've had to replace a couple of the ported pieces with stock, just to get customer cars to run right again.

I will never run one myself, or recommend one. If your stocker isn't cutting it, purchase a quality larger diameter aftermarket piece.

Seems like some people port the t/b and see a great improvment in throttle response and that is what I am looking for. But I feel the idle issues people have after porting the t/b is either related to porting in the range the blades sweep in idle operation. Or not having it tuned after the port and polish. I really think the key is not porting close to the blade.

I got the 87mm throttle body for $65 shipped and picked up a recon. X-Link from Dr. X for $125. So for the money even going from the 78mm to 87mm would be worth the $190. But I think I will get the truck up and running again with the X-Link and stock T/B. Then once I get all the bugs worked out related to the procharger and new intake setup, then I will go ahead and port the T/B. Then if it ends up causing issues I can just get another T/B for around the same price. But at least I will know if the issues are from just porting the T/B.

i ported mine which was my first porting job ever. it looks just like the photos posted by 300zx. i saw a dramatic increase in throttle response and felt NO horsepower increase. i did not remove or "half" the shaft nor did i touch the blade itself.
