Dadkins has been making 825whp in his GTO with a stock LQ9 for quite a while. It finally bent the connecting rods and the pistons starting hitting the counterweights on the crank, everything else was fine. Most of that comes down to tuning, everyone breaks pistons because they have a sub par tune or run it on **** fuel.
