How much is too much?

Jeff,
You may not want to install a different cam and that is your choice. However, I have had very good luck with a fairly mild Comp Cam P/N: 54-412-11 and appropriate springs. Read my comments here https://ls1tech.com/forums/showpost....2&postcount=48
I think that long tube headers (including the Thorley 310Y, ASM and TOG) are all good choices to enhance low to mid-range torque without harming top end power up to 6,000 RPM's. An air induction system will help, as will a good after-market exhaust (be sure though not to confuse decibel level with performance and remember that you need some exhaust back pressure to maintain the cylinder pressure long enough to maintain torque). Some kind of PCM reprogramming is a must. I'm using the Hypertech III, but then I want a program that will enhance performance and bump up the RPM limit and shift points while still running 87 Octane.
Don't just jump into buying stuff. You have the right idea to ask questions and do some research first.

thanks again everyone.
the cam would wait for a while. not sure if i wanna mess with it right now. but thanks for the recommendation on a mild one.
i have UPD intake so far. its way better than the K&N FIPKs ive used in the past so im happy there.
as for the fans- damn i didnt think fans alone would out-do the stock alternator. ill have to look into a 200amp(gonna get some offroad lights too
and a system one day) so ill bump the fans to the back of the list for now. get the other stuff first then the alternator and fans little later.
TIA

You can program the PCM yourself .. you just have to have the time and patience to do so. You can get LS1Edit and AutoTap or EFILive on a laptop. ATAP/EFILive wil tell you whats going on with the truck, and EDIT will let you edit the PCM. Currently EDIT isn't working for the 03 trucks properly yet, so that will have to wait. I knowEFILive will work with our trucks, I used it this passed weekend. I prefer EFILive over ATAP because it is much quicker for example, if you rev the engine by nailing the throttle and letting up quickly, you can watch the TP gauge on EFILive move with the throttle, but ATAp, if you do it quick enough you will miss the whole thing.
I have e-fans on my truck and don't have any charging problems. I also have a pretty good size system (80 amp system fuse) as well. If the 200a altenator weren't 300-400 bucks I would consider getting it, but since I don't have any problems yet, I'll hold off on replacing my 105a altenator. Of course both of them running full blast at the same time would over do it and start pulling on the battery, but I don't have the system running hard to often when I'm in the truck.
If you got that truck to run, why did you get a 4x4? I got the z71 then deciced to make it run with a blower, and look where I'm at now ... I'm sure parish would have something to say about that, but I couldn't keep a tranny in mine over 3000 miles so I got something a bit lighter.

i got the 4x4 so i could travel offroad easier and go to pismo(sand dunes) every now and then.
im not looking to run the truck on the strip.......sorry if i hinted at that. im just looking for more reliable, usable street power in daily driving. mods like that tend to up MPG, which is always a good side effect.
i didnt buy the truck to race, but its still got a fast motor in it

I C jeff .. I wouldn't recommend a blower or a cam in that case then. If you run out of things to do to it, I would consider a mild cam, emphasis on mild.
Headers are a good thing, I would go with one of the packaged programmers like HPP3 or the Diablo. E-fans I would consider as well. You might also consider a cold air intake kit, I wouldn't recommend the open filiment types though, especially since you're gonna be in sand and mud. Definantly go for an aftermarket exhaust.
My 105a altenator will hold 13.7-13.9 with fans, a/c, radio and lights running. That's still a charge on the battery which is ok by me for now.
