Haha, I had to, u know, I wouldn't want to put in an engine then have to pull it back out cuz the mounts don't work you know what I mean? U also want to make sure the mounts are correct, u know, cuz there's a chance you can break the head off the stud on the motor mounts trying to make it work, but who does that??? Hahaha jus messing with ya man

$450 for a LS1 long block is a very good deal, when I was looking into installing my 427 (7.0L) I wanted an aluminum block, but cost changed my mine. I would not go out and install an engine kit because the sleeves on the LS1 are fairly thin, so boring them is out of the question, but someone might say different, I was told 0.007 was the max boring on a LS1 engine. Since you are a first time user don't expect this motor to be in truck over the weekend, it might take several weekends.

Are you going to replace the pistons and rings or are you talking about doing the oil pump and timing chain? It seems that the whole "cheap ls1" would be completely gone if you went ahead and did a complete rebuild. I would'nt rebuild it unless it had a ton of miles or if the compression was down.

Stew go ahead and get it, put it in and be happy. Honestly if I had the money right now Id offer to pay for it. hell, the cam is worth 250-300, the heads about 150-200, and the short block Id guess about 600. The LS1 is as good at least as the LQ4, hell I may would even swap you. After seeing a used LS1 perform in a truck, Id love to have one, no rebuild or anything. Sure it would be great to be able to "build" it, but if it dowsnt need it, go ahead. Also I think even for a first timer it can be swaped in a full day or at most a day and a half.
