There are many factors of safe
safe depends on a few things
Do you have the proper fuel for 12# of boost?
Is the blower efficent at that level?
Main thing is the tune
Will the bottomend hold, yes with proper tuning

As little as 3#of boost can be unsafe with improper fuel and timing

as he says, what is safe is a relative question.

But this question is commonly discussed when all of us get together. I always say the same thing and i have no data to back it up. LOL. As long as you are under 11.9:1 AFR I believe our stock motors will take 9#'s all day long and some on Tuesdays. Once you pass 9#'s it becomes a questionable deal. Lots of stories of 10# to 12#'s set ups doing just fine, but it is the interent after all. I say 9#'s and 11.7:1 AFR with a safe spark and it will last a long time. Mine has. Obviously those die cast pistons aren't designed with boost in mind. So at some point the pressure and heat will degrade their life. Keep enough fuel in the mix and you'll push the life of them further.

Again, tons of variables, plus your motor may be fine but kiss those rear ends, trans, drive shaft u-joints, and so on and so on...u get the point.

this used to be a very popular (read: 2 posts a week) discussion. Everything said above is correct. It can be mentioned that a few have pushed 14, or even 18lbs with stock bottom ends successfully but those doing so are well prepared for catastrophic failure.

yeah i hear you guys, but im running 9lbs of boost right now and was thinking on going up to 12 but when doing so i was going to be adding 60lb injectors and also a meth kit as well and get my truck retuned also. i just want to hear all opinions on running 12lbs of boost and if it was a roll of the dice or not if you do it right.

I got a buddy running 16lbs of boost on a stock 6.0 with 46lb injectors & 110 octane with 21-23 degrees of timing...
But he does have a built 6.0 sitting in his garage, when this one lets go.....

I've been running ~10-12lbs for a few years....when it blows I'll cry and build another. Just be (mentally) prepared. When you play be prepared to pay, that's all.

I am running 12# with all supporting mods and you are right, it is a wait and see kinda thing. No two engines are the same and we have seen people running big boost with no problems and people blowing up engines on 7# so go figure.
