How much $ to install Eaton
#1
Hey what is a fair price to install an Eaton with stock gears? I am leaving 3.42s for highway mileage, I will eventually get a converter, and will probably put a slightly shorter tire soon, so hopefully I won't regret this. The shop I went to said 200-250 which includes the oil and additive. I thought this was steep since it sounds like a 3 hour job. What do you think? Is anyone with experience and reasonably close willing to do this for less tomorrow? Thanks.

thats sounds prety high to me, it took me less than 3 hours to do mine and i didn't know what i was doing. doing it a second time and with a lift i bet i could bet in done i close to an hour. i didn't have to reshim and they would want to add a little time for that just in case it needed it but it sounds like you usualy dont need to if your just tossing in a carier and no gears

Hey parish thanks for the reply. I was thinking about doing it myself to save the money. What tools will I need to buy? How did you change the carrier bearings? Let me know if this is right.
Remove cover. Remove wheels, brakes, pinion shaft and axles. Remove old carrier. Change bearings. Replace carrier. Will I need a measuring tool since the old shims work? Replace and fill with oil. Am I missing anything here? Could you do a quick step by step write up? Thanks a lot dude, I might try this tomorrow.

you dont touch the pinion
they sent me new bearings, i am not sure but i think you need the new bearings. since i had new bearings i had them presed on before i started.
you will need a torque wrench for the bearing caps you are supose to torque the ring gear but i just hit it with an impact. it has left handed threads. i also checked the back lash with a dial indicator, specs called for .002 - .010, using the factory shims it was at .0105, i figured that was close enuff for me. it took longer to clean the gasket surfaces off than anything.
do you know how to pull the axles? if you know about c clips then you know about as much as i did when i changed mine. i used a rubber mallot to get the ring gear off the old carier and i used it again to help tap the shims in. keep everything in order, bearing cap sides and orentation, shim sides. i will send you a pic of some directions someone printed off for me, they might help.

holy smokes, you dont want these directions, they are scary and way to complicated and in depth.
say in here back lash should be .005 to .009
bearing cap bolts 85 ft lbs
ring bolts 220 ft lbs(in stages and criss cross patern)

Holy **** that is cheap. I bet he stays pretty busy. I am going to tell the local guy I changed my mind. I might get Red2k to help me do it. If not then I will try the guy in Gainesville.

cashdude... that is cheaper than me and a shorter drive. You are welcome to come up here but that is hard to beat....I have to stand buy my guy. We have a set of gears {620 final drive} with over 8700 laps on them and they still look new.
