i would like some oponions here as to how many miles this motor really has on it, is it posiable that it only has 42,000 like the seller told me? can the intake port get this dirty in 42,000 miles? it is out of an HD so it might have been used hard.
3 pic's of the suposed 42,000mile 6.0

now here are some pic's of my 50,000mile 4.8. not that this is a good indicator, i would like to know what you guys have been finding on your motors.

Those pulleys give you lots of indication. I just checked the pulleys on my 01 Hoe with 62K miles. The idler has spots where its starting to wear through and I didn't see any metal on the waterpump.
Its hard to say from the buildup on the runners, but it does look like its been eating lots of PCV oil.
My guess: 80K to 100K on it. I think it is probably just fine to run though. These motors are pretty darn strong.
One other note: nitrous use will clean up the intake runners which is one reason why your 40K mile motor looks good. Throw a few bottles of spray at the 6L and it will clean right up.
Can you buy the gauge cluster from the seller? That would give you what you need to know.

Yeah that motor looks to have alot more than 40k on it, especially by the finish wear on the pulleys. I have around 53k on mine and the finish is just starting to wear. I think BigTex is close with 80-100k. I looks like whatever truck it was in was well used.

Well that truck could have rolled, sat in a ditch, and left outside for 6 months before you got it. It's tough to say really. It could have been in a pond for all you know.
My F-150 has 105K on it and is 16 years old...my topend looked like that when I rebuilt it a few months back. Now it looks great. I suppose it is all about who maintains it and how it's treated.
Reasons like that are why I don't buy cars/motors/big stuff from several states away without seeing it in person first. There are a bunch of local yards to me that specialize in late model stuff so maybe I have it better.
Sorry for your troubles but what goes around comes around...

Maybe they let it idle a lot ... or had a 'cruise control' to idle it up to run something like a crain or hydraulic pump or something. Maybe you should ask how many hours the cluster had on it too. That might tell you more.

Maybe it was drove offroad alot. Fine dust and oil grime get stuff dirty quick. Drove hard?, who doesn't drive these trucks hard.
I'm pretty sure my truck has the paint wore off the waterpump with 100K on it. The paint deal could depend on the driving conditions also. Lots of dust and dirt might wear the paint a little quicker, who knows.
Like the others have said I wouldn't worry too much about it unless the motor locks up when you try to start it.

when I got my 6.0 i was concerned because of how dirty it was for the claimed 11,000 miles. I compared the pullies to my 24000 mile 4.8. Paint was worn/wearing off the water pump puley and idler pulley of the 4.8. The pullies on the 6.0 looked perfect,no paint worn off at all. It is possible you have a 40k engine. My 4.8 pullies were worn approx half of what yours are at 24k miles.
