How heavy are the fiberglass hoods
#1
I was wondering i like the looks of some of the fiberglass hoods out there just wondering how much of a weight difference there would be from the stock one
I'm thinking about weight reductions mods now
the front end needs to loose some pounds
Any ideas what's the lightests we can get our trucks to be?

Shouldn't this thread be in the Gp section ?
doesn't seem technical to me

are hoods considered performance products now?

i was putting together a small list of weight reduction mods i could do to my truck for this winter. fiberglass hood would be one of them if i wasnt a poor ***** but as for the rest of it...
spare tire
jack
tail gate
y-pipe and cat back (run collector extensions instead)
front sway bar.
front passenger seat
rear bench
maybe center console
all of that should add up to a good ammount of weight reduction
anything else i didnt list that isnt too incredibly drastic?
i think that hood should be worth a lot of weight, especially since its weight off the front

no sway bar? must be a drag thing
I wouldn't be surprised if a glass hood weighs more, especially if you take the factory liner off. It's pretty thin.
Skinny front tires might save 20-30 lbs. No inner fenders. Air bags instead of steel springs. Take a hole saw to your frame. Remove the carpet.
There are some beautiful carbon-fibre hoods out now

I have heard that they don't fit as well. I've seen a few F-body guys with them and they are not quite as refined as the steel ones, but those are cars and I don't know the maker of them. it's gonna be hard to take weght out of the front and still be "safe" for daily driving. I would also cost some $$$. But a fiberglass front clip ,bumper and all would do it if anyone knows who make one. I've seen a whole body kit for the trucks. http://www.gtsfiberglass.com/pro_truck.htm

Alright 99GMC Canadian, don't come on here mentioning carbon fiber hoods and not tell us who sells them.
There is a BIG list of weight reduction items for f-bodys over in the drag forum. I bet the trucks have alot of equivalent parts.

a few things you might want to consider before the fiberglass:
1. safety.
2. warping. i'm not sure how hot it can get in toronto, but i'm sure enough heat over a period of time will cause the hood to warp and bend.
just a little heads up before you dive in.

I was going to get a fiber glass hood a while ago, but at the time, they were not fitting right. This was when they were still in development though, they might have got them fixed by now though. If it were me, and I was trying to reduce some weight, I would start somewhere else first. After you buy the hood and get it painted, it does not seem to be worth the money to save a few pounds.
