how to check motor?
#3
cylinder compression, pull the heads check the valves. but unless you tear it down you won't know how the crank, bearings, guides, block, so on and so on are. do you know it's history, wondering if it's not rebuilt or a new long block why it's not still in a truck ? unless the motor in your truck now is totally shot i can't see dropping something questionable in it's place. in other words, rebuild it, and while your at it build it. if you run it and something goes, it will cost you more later.

Theres all kinds of tests you can run on a bare block, magnafluxing, ultrasonic testing, pressure testing, you name it. Its almost impossible to do a compression test on an uninstalled engine, so a leakdown is about the only other thing you could do. You can also take a look at the oil to make sure there is no coolant in it, and if there is and the head gaskets are good, then you're looking at a crack somewhere.
