Default How the Change oil light works..

Does the change engine oil go by miles or is there a sensor in the oil that somehow checks the oil and tells when its old????
Thanks,
Derek

I believe it does it every 6000 miles. To reset it you turn the key on and hold down the gas pedal or you press the gas pedal 3 times and then hold it down till it goes off.

I understood that the computer monitored the engine rpm's and the load (perhaps temperature). You can go a long ways if all you do is highway driving, but you will have to change it often if you are pulling a trailer.

You can reset the oil change meter by turning the ignition to on (not started) and pressing the gas pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.

The manual says there are a lot of factors involved, but my experience shows me that mileage plays the largest factor. And the PCM/BCM doesn't know you've changed your oil unless you tell it, by resetting the light.

When I changed my oil every 3K, that's when the light came on - right about 3K miles. Now I change my oil every 6K and that's when the light comes on - right about every 6K.

I think it's be engine hours too. after 3k miles (first oil change) i had 60% life remaining. I forgot how many hours were on the truck then, but at around 5k miles it read 0%
