Well? With modern day mufflers, what do you guys do to speed up the process of the muffler "breaking in"? Years ago we used to fill our glasspacks up with gasoline and spin them over to soak up all the fiberglass, then install with muffler clamps and go drive. The exhaust would get hot and break the material down in the glasspacks to get a more aggressive tone. I've also heard of guys drilling holes and installing zerk fittings in their mufflers to inject grease. The grease getting hot will burn the packing out of a muffler and give it usually a deeper more aggressive tone. Is this safe to do in todays fuel injected cars? I have a silverado SS catback I installed on my truck and I like it other than the fact it's a tad too quiet on my 4.8. I was thinking of drilling and installing a few zerks randomly around the muffler and shooting some grease in. It'll smoke and smell like hell I'm sure but I want to burn some of the packing out of the muffler and see how it sounds. I will most likely end up putting a magnaflow muff on but I don't want to set my truck on fire doing this experiment either..... Thoughts on this????

Ummmm, a half stick of dynamite will usually get rid of the packing. Just dont do this when the muffler is still on the truck, nice field works well.

I dont know man you lost me on that one, I get the point you are making but I have never heard of it.

go play in your truck after a rainy day and then go romp a few puddles rapidly cooling off the can tends to break up the packing quite well

 

maybe take it off and shoot a flamethrower through it.

How certain are your that there is material inside?

 

There isn't any material inside a stock Silverado SS muffler. A few years ago, someone cut one open and posted pics, there's just three sound chambers and one resonation chamber. No material at all.
