how big of a block?

A 417 for 4-5k is probably a short block, no top end. You will need to spend good money for good heads/cam for the top end to match the short block, or you will be holding it back. I went through this same thing about 3 years ago, and look what I ended up going with. Strokers are torque monsters, but from what I have learned, are not the longest lasting set up to go with, plus to do it right it will cost you. I have about as much in my engine/turbo, as I would have in a well built 408, and would have had a lot less hp in the end.

yeah. i dont want to be cheap, and dont plan on it. im just trying to understand what to do, and what not to do. for example, my roomate bought a set of as cast heads from trick flow, sent them off to TEA, for 200 bucks and had them ported out to trickflows 235 or 245s...he save almost a thoussand dollars, and had the EXACT set of heads. i dont know every thing there is to know about strokers, but if someone on here dose know and can maybe throw in some suggestions, that would be great. thats why i get on this site every night. mostly to read and learn. thats why i ask the questions, to learn. from what i hear there are lots of ways of doing a quality stroker, i just want to do it right. but i also dont want to drop 13k on a motor...when i know there are guys out there building quality 417 strokers for 4 or 5k.
my crank from my 408 is 2200 new, the rods were 1500 new, they sell then in a package for 4500 for rotating assembly then you still got to buy a block, get machine work, get it assembled, you have to buy fasteners, cam bearings. You can easily have 6k into just the bottomend. then a good set of heads is going to run ya 2k minimal, 1500 for intake setup, 1k for good size headers.............**** adds up fast dude

For the budget youre talking about a forged piston Lq4 with a turboe will net you a lot more power for the money. Youre talking about building a stroker but you havent said what kind of truck its going in, what you want to use it for, budget, or expectations.

my budget is around seven grand. i had a 6.0 with a 76mm turbo making over 600 hsp. i hated it. its not the sorce of power im looking for. i know that things add up quick my truck just went up in flames, but i know i had at least 25-30 grand in motor swaps and such in it in the end. im not afraid to spend money, but i dont want to waste it when there are solutions to net you the same power for cheaper. ive had the turbo thing, made crazy power...its just not what im looking for. in the end i just like big cams, big convertors, lots of torque, things like that.

What did you hate so much about the turbo?
6k will get you a budget 408(eagle crank/rods diamond pistons) with some decent heads. id talk to WCCH for heads, he can also supply you with all your fasteners. Do you plan on assembling the motor yourself?

I bought the assembled short block from another guy, but its a forged K1 stroker crank, diamond flat top pistons, stock 317 heads with rev vales and patriot dual springs. it was an lq9 block.

I am building a 375 when I get to it, and the parts are "rated" to the 900hp range. I will never see it, but I have about $750 in mahle 4.06 pistons, eagle rods with arp 2000 bolts(900hp rated). another $150 in good bearings, and quoted $400-500 for the machine work. I just shopped ebay, and lots of forums to find brand new parts that ppl want to sell for cheap cause they are out of money. my pistons are from mahle, they were closeouts. so i should have ~$1900 in my shortblock including the price of a lq4 longblock. $1000-$2000 for heads, $400 for a cam, and $1200 for intake and plumbing.
not everything has to be store bought new, just shop around, and collect parts as they come up. Take your time.
