Home made transmission jack

What's the best way to do this? I have 3 regular jacks to work with but I'm not sure what to use to balance it. I have heard of a block of wood but where exactly do I put it
Thanks

I took a 12x12 piece of wood and drilled a hole through the middle and used a bolt into the ecnter of my floor jack pad. It worked well until I was lowering my transfer case with it and the weight shifted and my jack fell over.
If I were doing it over again, I'd buy or rent a transmission jack.

i got mine from harbor freight for $50, it works well but is just a 12" square or so, has no provisions for a 4wd. it has paid for itself a few times all ready and i just got it a year or so ago.
