Edit is nothing like the hand held programmers.
if your not carefull you can really mess something,. up.
but yes you can save your stock tune to disk, as well as any other tune you have. this is what i have done.
the first thing was to make a back up copy of my stock tune and put it somewhere safe.
from there its history. i just save every tune that i do just incase something happens and i need to fix. you can also fry your pcm with edit.

Hey, I did something similar and it cost me $425 to fix the truck, they just popped a new computer in it! But I found later on, that they can do a memory erase on the computer and put the stock program back in from reading your vin number, and that is only $125. So Desert GMC admited this to me later, and I asked for my refund of the difference and they told me to suck *****!

Hrm, I read up a little more on edit, basically it has no manual or any documentation or explanation of what anything is? It's basically just a GUI of GM's programming?
Trust me, I'd get Westers, or Nelson's or another of those kick *** custom tunes, but being under warranty I can't think of a plan of action that I might take when I have to take the truck in for servicing.
Someone tell me this, If you had the Diablo and fried your computer, and were messing around with the troubleshooting and the Performance tune had all kinds of hokey numbers, would you plug it back in to a fresh new computer and hope for the best?
If no, I should just get a Hypertech then? I looked at their installation video and it looks like since there aren't many choices then there's alot less that I can mess up.
I was thinking too about getting a laptop and Autotap or EFI Live just to see whats going on. Just for kicks. You can't fry anything with Autotap or EFI Live right?

I have and use LS1 edit, the Predator and HPPIII (Chingon, come get the programmer already) They are all different animals. LS1 edit well, do some reading and you will get the picture...powerful tool with NO boundaries. HPPIII basic programmer, pretty safe and very limited. Predator Intermediate programmer with much more scope for a non-techincal user.
LS1-edit: You had better understand how air-fuel makes power and be able to interpolate data to make reasonable decisions. Data logging software or a dyno are must for best tuning. Can exceed vehicles safe operating perameters. MOST versatile in the hands of a good tuner, but not impossible for a beginer user to understand with some research. Can be purchased for multi or single use.
Predator: Plug and play for basic user with expandability. Has custom tune options and user tune option with safeties. Not unlimited in its ability but not constrained to "on/off" tunes. Has OBDII scanner built in. Will have data log ability and computer interface for playback. Single vehicle use only. This is a powerful tool which has many upgrade features to come and already installed but not active-read: don't poke around anymore than you would in edit if you dont know what your playing with. Makes adequate power and shift improvements with dual modes is great.
HPPIII: Plug and play for basic user. Ease of use is #1 (except download time.) Tuning features are "on/off." Seems to make adequate power and shift improvements are nice.
All in all these are flash tuners and certain precautions need to be taken when using any .. They can all cost you a pretty penny if you take for granted what they do and fry a computer.
I currently have the Predator installed in the truck and like the A/F a little more than with the HPPIII (being I am a dry nitrous user.) I have kept the tuner in because its simple and gets the job done ... I save edit for my bigger projects: 66 Malibu-5.7 LS1, 72 Nova 5.3 LM7 turbo. Having street-legal BIG power classics is just so much nicer than getting harrased by the local PD.
