An X pipe is when it looks like 2 exhaust pipes run together in the shape of an X. This is suppose to balance the exhaust pulses and makes them flow better.
The H pipe is something like a true dual setup with a pipe that goes from one pipe to the other, this is also called a balance tube. It's suppose to do about the same thing the H pipe is, but isn't as effecient supposedly.

The H pipe balance tube was used when cars had dual pipes running down seperate side. It supposedly helps balance exhaust pulses. When done correctly it will make a little more power and I think make the exhaust a little quieter. The H pipe is simply a crossover pipe between the sides looking like an H. The X actually has the pipes cross thru each other, supposedly works better. It's not going to make a huge difference, I think a 5.0 mag did a test with a lot of H and X pipes years ago. I don't remember the power numbers being very different.
Our trucks stock Y pipe balances the pulses just like a X or H pipe would.

I'm not an exhaust expert, but if the H or X is designed to "balance" pulses. Then a Y 2-into-1 will definitly balance it, they become one exhaust. I'm not sure how much flow a stock y-pipe can handle, but it seems many guys with only minor mods report loss of low-end torque when going to true duals.
You might search or ask around, I've noticed a post recently where "bigbody" is looking for a stock y-pipe, sounds like he might have had duals but wants to go back to stock. The post is from yesterday titled "new y-pipe"

i have heard that if using a straight-through muffler to go with the X. I f you are using a baffled muffler to go with the H. They both promote 'positive' scavenging of exhaust pulses as they balance the two sides together.
