LOL....I wish I could get a warranty for it!!

So it sounds like it's a bearing of some sort...I've heard cam, main, and rod all three thrown out. Can I R&R a rod cap just like a main cap without having to replace the bearings? If so - rod and main would be the place to start looking since I have the bottom of the motor apart anyway.

well if the rod is out of round at the connection to the crank it'll need to be machined. making you have to go with a larger bearing.

as far as replacing a main cap without replacing the bearing, I would just buy the damn bearing, they're like 7 bux at oreilly.

something I just thought of about the rod cap/bearing. you could potentially become out of balance if you replace either one.
im no master engine mechanic so correct me if im wrong

I don't think that it is bearing material but not positive. It looks more like shavings of aluminum and about the only place that could be created in you engine would be from the oil pump. Take the oil pump apart and see what you got. Pulling a few bearing caps and pics wouldn't hurt. You can pull all the bearing caps and re-torque without any issues as long as you put them back the way they were of course.

Its bearing material. Dont know from what part of the engine though, could be a cam bearing, rod bearings, or the main bearings. It is definately a bearing though.

I am with him, you will be able to tell if the cam bearings are bad just by pulling the cam and checking it.....

Alright, got me a starting place it sounds like. I'll go ahead and pull the main and rod caps one at a time since those are easiest and most accessible.

Or should I just pull the motor out and go through the whole thing?

Is it possible the dark pieces are plastic from the lifter trays? They look like plastic to me, and that's the only place I can think of that's plastic in side the engine. As for the metal pieces, they look like bearing material to me. The first close-up picture you posted shows the wear marks of what looks like a spun bearing. It appears the bearing let some of the material go and they got mangled and wadded up in the process.

Chris,
Wish I could come look it over with you. The large shiny piece looks like aluminium. If that piece isn't magnetic, it looks to me like a piston pin boss. Good luck and let us know wht you find.

The shiny pieces are magnetic, so I'm pretty sure it's not aluminum. Are you back in MN?
