Default Help with 97 Z71

First off, I normally post in other sections for my TA, but my dad contacted me today and said he wants some help giving his Z71 a kick. I don't think this is the right place to ask this, but I need help. Even if you guys know where to go. I can't find anything.

But, for those of you that CAN help, like I said, he's got a 97 Z71 with the 5.7 Vortec. He's already got a Flowmaster catback and K&N. What else can he do that's relatively cheap for power? Any free mods? I'm already thinking he can do a cam swap, maybe headers, ditch the cats (no emission testing) What do you guys think? Oh, no nitrous, he wants the power all the time. Thanks guys...

hate to steer you away from this truck forum but fullsizechevy.com/forum probably has more info on that engine. I think most of the people here have the 4.8, 5.3 and up.

Cam swap and headers would wake up that 5.7 pretty nicely IMO.
That would also run you about $1500, so if that is "relatively cheap" then maybe go with some computer tuning,
Electric fans are about $400 or you can find some LS1 fans for ~$150.
I dunno, anyone else got suggestions...its late here I'm kinda pooped so my brain isn't working that great
