OK I speak from experience. Ive had a Westers Tune,Nelson Tune, & Fastchip Tune(Ed Wright). All were mail order. I probably had at least 5 updates from each of those. I did mail order tunes for when I had just a intake and catback to when I had a cammed LS1 w/LT headers,gears,etc... I never had anywhere close to a close to perfect tune. Obviously the more mods I made the harder it was to tune and the farther off it was but what do you expect its in sense guessing or going off a similiar setup as yours. I dont care if two people have a 03 5.3 with intake and exhaust. There tunes need to be different. Im not saying that any of the tuners suck or anything but in all reality regardless of the mods and even more so the more mods you do your truck needs to be tuned at least in person driving around and at best on a dyno. Everytime you get a mail order tune its a gamble if its gonna be close or not. And dont get me wrong they are close alot of the time but its still a gamble. As a result of mail order tunes I lost a motor. It was basiclly my fault for taking the gamble that I could get a good tune for my cammed(and some other bolt-ons) 4.8l. That was even after sending my scan file. Has it been done sure but I was one of the ones that lost the gamble. I wont say who or anything else becuase Ive put it behind me and learned a valuable leason! And again it seems that you are totally stock. Chances are you can get away with a mail order tune but its not 100% certain or even close.

OK back to your problem. Did you get a 93 octane,87 octane, or one of those dual octane tunes? If you did a 87octane tune than it should be better than that but not much. Sure some people have these freaks that respond better but others have lemons(not a good term but you know what I mean).

i agree with tigerfan, your first mailorder tune is a gamble, but thats why they do the free updates. not only do you benifit from it. but so do they. by learning what needs to be changed for different applications. Keep sending it back and it'll keep getting better. It'll only cost you shipping. certainly cheaper than finding another tuner and starting from scratch...

Well if you look at my mods, then you'll know what I have. My problem is my truck is still not running right. My tuner seems to think its in safe mode because I over revved it, and didn't shift from first into second. I posted a Loss of Power awhile back and still am not able to fix it yet. I am running 91 octane for better performance. I had the hypertech installed, but he over rode that, and did his tune. My concern is spending $ 379 on a tune and only getting 10 peak hp out of it. Maybe he can only get 10 out of it because its in safe mode, but once he gets it fixed, should I expect more hp and TQ? Mine is not a mail order. Its a guy that has his own shop, and builds LS1 race motors. When I seen it on the dyno, I was suprized to only see 10 peak gain. The numbers were 252 rwhp and 272 TQ before the tune, after the tune, it was 262 rwhp and 297 lbs of TQ. I'm not sure what all he did to it, because he didn't show me, but I do know that he ajusted quite a few things. One, was taking ALL of the TQ management out, which felt better in the TQ range. Right around 35 mph, I would jump on it, and it would down shift, and felt like it was going to lift the front tires off the ground. That felt pretty awsome!! The question I had at first was, how much hp should I expect from a $ 379 tune? I would like to do my own tunes, but I don't know where to start? I don't have the software for it or know how to get it out limp mode. I really sucks that my truck isn't running right or I would buy all the stuff I need to do my own tune. I trust him in fixing my truck, but no sure about the tune. All of you guys that have done all of this stuff before should know how much I should get from a 5.3

Once again, you can't look at the peak numbers. Look at the area below the curve. That is where you want it and where you will notice the difference. This is also why 1000 horsepower Supras only run 11 second quarters miles...big peak, but very little area under the curve.

Something is definetly wrong. And whatever it is can be fixed via tuning. Has he ever done a truck before? You said he does LS1 work so Im assuming he has tuned them. So I would think he could tune trucks. I dont understand this safe mode either. It all can be fixed via tuning. I would get a refund.

Yes, he works on trucks, and he's worked on mine before. I'm going to take it to him next week. They tune and build race motors. As far as safe mode which is the same as limp mode, its something that CAN be fixed, but I don't know how to myself. I wish I had the money to buy all the hp tuning stuff, but its out of reach on my budget. I'm like alot of other guys out there that are still learning. I really want to learn myself. I just have research.
