Default which heads

ok i'm building a 383 for the hoe. i'm going n/a for now. i'm trying to decide which factory heads to go with. its between ls1 heads and 317 heads. the ls1 heads will give me way better compression than the 317's will the better compression over come the better flow of the 317's? do the 317's realy flow that much better than the 241 ls1's?

If you can give us some of the particulars of your engine build ie. pistons (flat top or dished) we can probably help you choose the right heads to start with. Also, you should consider the LS6 (#243 casting). They have a 65cc chamber that can be easily milled to 61cc which is the same as your stock heads now. The LS6 heads have nearly identical ports to the 317 heads but with a smaller chamber size.

well i looked at the ls6 heads and they would have too high compression. not sure i want really high compression in a heavy tahoe. and besides i found a set of ls1 heads for 150 shipped so i got them lol.

why can't you get 317 and shaved them down to raise the compression

the 317's, can be had for 300~ and then mill job for 50$ to get you any comp you want. And the flow numbers will be well worth it. your shorting a 3k $ project by 150$'s on something that will be WAY easier to do now then when its in the truck.

well the heads are already paid for. i had to act fast and nobody replied until i had already purchased them. i'll do some hand porting on them and go from there. maybe next year i can aford some good heads. besides theres no body in maine that could shave these heads. its hard to find any good machine shops up here.
