so basicly the 700R4E should NOT be in my friends truck. if thats really in there. yah, if he goes to the bone yard i told him to get a 4L80E and have that built. thanks everyone for all the info. if anyone has anymore info for me the more the better. i just want to get my friends tranny problem fixed!!!

Actually if it is a old 700R4 they are trouble prone until modified properly. As far as trannies, I would look for a 4L60 instead because it has a 3.09 first gear vs the 80's 2.48 which will make a big difference in low speed launchs.

Not sure what he has without seeing it. It may even be a hybrid the shop slapped together. He needs to go to a different shop too.

The 700 is not supposed to be in there. I don't care how much alike they are, they aren't the same!
Is your bud running any power adders? If not, I would get a stock 60e, put a TransGo shift kit in it and a set of servos. Be conservative with the shift kit and even more if you use billet servos.
WHatever you do, don't let that shop touch his truck again.

No really difference strength wise and I myself prefer the late model 700R4. Also, you have to watch those shift kits as the stock sprags in the 700R4/4L60 are not that strong. They hold up fine with resonably stock shifts and mild pressure boost but if you bang shifts too hard for long with a "kit" without upgrading sprag you will trash the tranny and it will be catastrophic when it fails too.
