Gutting cats

I live in Vegas where the emissions are strick. So, your saying don't waste money on the aftermarket cats? What is a ORY? I'm still learning this stuff. One of my freinds told me today of his way on gutting the cats. It was to take a tire iron and poke holes in the inside and it will break away the ceramic. Is this true or is it the stupid way? Also, no matter how I choose to do this, I know the o2's will trigger the engine light, but it won't hurt anything until I get the o2 Sims will it?

ORY= off road Y and the easiest way to gut cats is to shove a piece of exhaust tubing through them and weld it in.... If you have really strict emissions use Magnaflow aftermarket Cats.They seem to work really well on my friends Trans Am... And O2 sims are cheap you can get them for like 50-60 bucks on E-bay...

hey since ur new man, ill explain it a little better, coming from your manifolds, you have two seperate exhaust pipes, that come together into one, and exit out the rear of your truck. becasue of its two into one design, they call it a Y Pipe, u also have h pipes, because of their similarity to an H, and an x pipe, wich crosses your exhaust flow through an X in the pipe. but an ORY is an OFF ROAD version of a standard Y pipe, the off road meaning its designed with no catalytic converters, supposed to be used for off road use only, track ect. a Normal Y pipe has the converters built right into it, like your factory Y pipe you have on your truck right now. There are a few ways to gut them!

1. Cut the cats down, and ram a peice of metal rod through the honeycomb inside them, untill it is all knocked out, scrape the sides of the inside of the cat, blow it out with compressed air, try to get as much of it as you can, and get it re welded cleanly back into place. This way has been said to change the flow of your exhaust a bit, its the way i did my own on my truck back in the day, i ddnt notice a problem with it.

2. Run a exhaust pipe through the cat, by doing this, you totally bypass that open space, and keep a straight flow with your exhaust. this is going to need to be done an at exhaust shop, due to the fact u have to bump the openings of your cats up a little to allow for the pipe to fit through.

The whole idea is to make it as vusually stock as possible. So as to pass visual inspection. So clean welds and some patience are needed.

And yes, your rear o2's will shoot you a code or two, so o2 simulators usually fix that problem.

I bought a pair of casper o2 sensors off of summit racing for like 88 bucks, but they didnt turn off the ses light for me, i was kinda pissed, they were sending like 450 mhz or megavolts, lol, something like that, and it was supposed to be higher. So my Light still came on, but for most people, the sims work, so im most likely just a fluke in that system.

I eventaully made it to allen nelson, and he took care of me, thats the best way to take your ses lights off, a custom tune. Nelson, and i think theres westers, and wait4me, and some others floating around.

but as far as a dumb idea, no, i wouldnt say so. It makes a hell of a difference in the tone and aggressiveness of your exhaust. I noticed TWO things from gutting my cats back in the day. A small loss in low end power, and a change in the smell of my exhaust, smelled better to me. thats it, other than it was LOUD!

Hell man, i was running manifolds, gutted cats, no mufflers, with straight pipes out the rear of the truck, true dualed, with 22 inch long, 4inch opening echo bells. 2.25 piping. YEAH!!! that was loud as hell!

That was pretty in depth. Thanks for the link. I'll talk to my shop about doing mine. One more question, some people say gutting the cats makes the exhaust sound like blowing air thru a tin can. Is this true?

Never sounded like blowing air through tin can but it is Raspy... Unless you like a little Rasp.....
