guage cluster?
#1
this is probably an old question but i need more info. i want to do the escalade guage cluste swap but i hear there are some complications. well i have a '99 silverado and i heard that on my year truck the airbag light stayed on. also doing the swap will cause the odometer to start over. what are the ways to fix these problems? i mainly am concerned about the airbag light. i really don't car about the mileage because i plan on keeping the truck until the wheels fall off. thanks...

GM shop manual has a procedure for syncing the cluster with the SIR ("Supplemental Inflatible Restraint" which is GM for airbag). You need a scan tool. Dealer should be able to do this pretty easily. I know that the procedure is specifically mentioned in the section on FBody guage cluster replacement, but it is not mentioned for the trucks. Could be an oversight, not sure.
Also, if the odo is electric (LED), then it will show the mileage as stored in the PCM. If it's mechanical, then you're supposed to be able to match it up. Otherwise, in most states you're required to put a label on the doorjamb stating that the actual mileage is as indicated plus the offset value.

Nope, it starts at zero miles.

As far as I know, to keep it legal, you have to get a tag from the dealer that goes on the door saying what milage you swaped the clusters out at. I have heard of some guys going to a speedo shop and getting the correct mileage put on the new clusters. If you (or anyone else has) do one of these let us know. A swap is on my to do list, but mainly for the trans temp gauge.

Since you are in the Houston area, check out Autocraft Electronics on Harwin. They will order the guage cluster and program it for you for about the same price as GMpartsdirect. BTW, don't order from gmparts direct. I still do not have mine yet. The first one was broken when they sent it to me and they have been draggin *** ever since to replace it. I originally placed to order Jan. 8. Here it is Feb. 18 and I still don't have the replacement in my hands yet.
Rick at Autocraft has been the nicest person to deal with and if I would have known that before hand, I would have purchased it from them.
