Ditto on that one. GM actually makes alignment tools for this stuff. Its best to get the pan on before you tighten the rear cover too. Front main leaks on some guys that forget and TQ the cover down before the pulley is on the crank snout.

Just the opposite,I would tighten the pan last, the rear cover will self align on the crank if there is no pressure from the oil pan, same with the front, before tightening the oil pan loosly install the front cover, install the crank pulley to align the front cover(may have had the pulley on most of the way when tightening the front cover),now tighten the front cover bolts.Lastly tighten the oil pan to spec. This is how i remember doing it.Anyone else feel free to jump in.

I agree. My mistake was trying to align the edge of the cover to the block. Had I installed the cover and allowed the crank to set the alignment the leak probably would not have happened.
Set the cover, torque, then install the pan.

well i had the pan already installed. remimber i'm doing this in the truck well anyhow i took the plate off and pulled the seal bought a new one installed the cover the the new seal had a plastic ring thing with it so i pushed the ring into the seal to hold it out some and push it all up against the crank then just swiftly pushed the ring in and the pastic poped out. its all in i'll give her a couple of days to make sure before i say anything but my garage floor was clean last night when i started it so that is a plus i guess.

Is the plastic retainer an installation tool or part of the seal? I've read about the special GM tool that's used to install the rear main, and after reading about rear main leak horror stories, I'm gonna buy that tool if it's necessary.
