Default got a motor question for you guys

i suspect that i will be breaking an engine part in the next few months and was looking for some opinions.

would a 408(4" crank, 4.030 bore) with some nitrous be able to make any more power or any better power than a beefed up 6.0 with a bigger shot. they would both have forged pistons, good rods, good head bolts, heads and cam.

does that make any sence. i could save the 2k that a 4" crank costs and put a 2 stage nitrous with dedacated fuel system on the thing. probably get a little better miliage with the 6.0. be able to feed it with my whipple too. i have pleanty of power right now for daily driving so a while a 408 would help there i don't really ever floor it now(unless racing)

with the recent post on the ease of using the 4l80E it has me thinking of BIG power, i am sure either route would get me big power but what would the advantages/disadvantages be for the 2 choices.

except for maybe a little more juice?

and since you brought it up how about a 4.125" crank for a 422ci set up? cost just a hair more than a 408 but now it is "over square" or longer stroke than bore. i really don't know what direction would give the the best ET but what i do know is i could afford to do a stong 6.0 this summer but not a 408/422.

Please step away from the truck. You have a serious sickness that you should seek help with.

So I'm here to help.

Don't waste your money on the 4" crank if your going to be running a whipple and nitrous, torque will NOT be a problem. Just how much power are you thinking about though. A stronger crank may become a necessity, although Harlan is running alot of power through that one. If your going to be spraying, heat from the unintercooled boost shouldn't be a problem. The heads and cam will also cause the boost level to drop at least a few psi so you might be able to run that 11psi pulley and only see 7-9psi.

The 4L80E can be built for around 1200hp but, it's going to cost you to keep it automatic. Somewhere in the $2500-$3000 range just for the trans. Speartech can fix you up with the proper wiring and computer work. They've never done it but John, looked into it for me. Both of your driveshafts will have to be modified, exhaust?, crossmembers. $$$ Lots of companies can fix you up with a 4L80E(TCS, FLP, TCI, ARE)

With a 100 shot on a head/cam/7-9true psi 370 I am going to guess you'll be in the 750-900 flywheel hp range. Do you really need that much power?

I understand what you're talking about. I think there's a line some where that goes from street rod to pro street with a little extra weight but I'm not sure where that line is. I think the stroker will be faster but it always takes more gas to go faster. There's another line with the nitrous. A stock motor will pick up more rwh off the juice than a built motor will on the same 100 shot. Can you put enough to it to even the odds?

hell yes he does, so do i. i'm hoping for 400 when i build my motor, and the possibility of running a 200 shot. i saw a new supercharger from magnacharger today, some of you have probably seen it but it replaces the intake manifold like an old school dragster blower. i like the way it mounts so you don't have to run any new piping or anything like that. i might look into that when i get close to finishing up my motor.

That Magna charger is nice. Saw one on a vette that came from that Lingenfelter shop in Carrolton.

Well, John @ Speartech told me that the 4L80E uses different software in the computer and that I would need a program from a HD truck that had the 80E. Yelo seems pretty sure about his info but, John is no dummy either. Definately something to check into. Oh yeah, Speartech said two wires would have to be pulled from the 60E trans harness and one added, then plugged into the PCM. Sure doesn't sound like a direct swap to me. Not hard but, not direct and simple.

As for the driveshafts, I don't think a stock driveshaft is gonna hold up under the type of power your talking about even if they did fit.

Check those pictures out in that thread. The 80 uses a 6 bolt converter and the 60 uses a 3 bolt. That means a new flexplate unless the stock one has six bolt holes. I've never had the trans out of a newer truck so I can't comment but, I was told I'd need a HD flexplate.

Can someone take a picture with some measurements of a 1500HD 2wd crossmember?

Lots of questions.
