Default Good place to start?

I have a 01 Z-71 5.3L with true dual 40 series flows, k&n intake, and i removed the clutch-fan... someone said that it would a good start to take the stock cam and lifters from a corvette and put in it... is that a good idea, and what else would be good ideas?

Thanks!

You can find a lot better cam for it, the Z06 cam is weak(like a 205/193 or something like that). Run a search on here and read up the cam threads and you will find a lot of info. It also depends how good you want your drivability to be. I'm goin with a 216/220 .525,.532 114 cam with some ls6 or 918 valve springs. You will also have to do the supporting comonents like hardened pushrods, retainers, oil pump, timing chain yada yada. Along with a higher stall probly a 3k, and you will need to build up ur tranny a bit(shift kit, servos, cooler). There are guys going with the tr224 or 220 too but then you have to watch out for drivability issue if you have an ecsb and want ur truck to remain a DD. Thats for the cam stuff.

But if you are not looking to drop 2g's on your truck then just go with a custom tune like Nelson or Wait4Me until you are ready to spend the big bucks. and that alone could get you 20 rwhp. they run from about $150 up to $400. Check out the sponsors on the right>>>>>>

If you rally want some major power then to the cam and then go FI. A Radix SC and the cam, tranny, tune could get to over 400 rwhp ther you are now at about 250-260.

Im sure others will chime in too, but that is my .02
Main thing is, do a search and figure out what you want out of your truck and mabye even figure out what you want it to run in the 1/4/ That would help us help you a lot!

I ran a 218/224 113 cam in my 5.3 and loved it. I had a 206/212 in there and swapped to a stock LS1 cam and liked it the same, and they can be had for next to nothing. Personally, if youre going to go through the trouble to swap cams and springs, I'd go at least 212/216 or 216/220. Also you can call Cam motion, and tell them what you want, and they will make a cam for you. Thats what I did with my new motor You also will need a stall to get teh most out of it.

What would the 218/224 113 cam cost, with everything, about? This is my daily driver truck, so i cant go to big. I would really like to see it get into the high 14's. I'm about to buy some 20's for it, and then i'm removing the cats, getting a hypertech pp3, and i was thinking about 3.73's, but i'm not sure about that, what do you guys think?

as far as the hypertech.... kinda a waist of money. A good tune would cost you about as much if not less and come with lifetime reprograming. A must if you get a beefer cam and want to get the most out of it. 2 names you will see here as far as tunning goes, Nelson and Wait4me, from all the posts I have read they are both world class. I am going to be getting a PCM from Wait4me in about 4 days... (4 hours and 31 minute but whos counting right?)
I have not done a lot to the engine as of yet, kinda just getting my foot in the door for the lifetime reprograms....so ever time I change something, he can get me up and going....for free....

The hypertech (from what I read) doesnt adrress things like torque management, and only really programs like 21 tables out of 2xx something...
this is all stuff I have read on this forum... you can do a search and find all this info for yourself if you care to research befor you buy.

Alot of people go with the 212/218. its a good all around cam. I had it in my 4.8 and actually have it in my LS1 also. I know a few people persoanlly that have it in their SS's. At least get the 212/218 its very very streetable!
