Default Going from 5 to 6 speed on 88-95 silverados?

ok we started doing the header install on my dads truck and hes really thinking about doing a 6 speed swap. has anyone done a t56 swap on these 88-95 silverado trucks???

his is a 95 with a 350 and a 5 speed. He would like to get the 6 speed and i told him that in the rear end with that tranny he would need at least 4.10 gears to make it worth it. BTW hes running 31 inch tall tires

thanks guys

What T56 are you talking about...the viper T56 or the Camaro T56. If it was the Camaro T56-4.10s would be perfect, the viper has a lower overdrive so a 4.30 gear or so would be a better choice. Yes, people have swapped a T56 for the T5 and even a 700r4. The driveshaft is the same for a 700r4. The t56 is the same length as a 700r4. The shifter slot may need to be slide back a few inches but other than that....its a pretty simple swap if you already have a T5.

You're going to need a T56 from an LT1 f-body, with the clutch, PP and flywheel. I'm not sure what kind of clutch (cable or hydraulic) the 88-95's have but the LT1 f-body's use a hydraulic. If it has a hydraulic, then you're in business and you can just use the f-body slave. As for the crossmember and driveshaft...well that might have to be custom. Also I would look at the VSS and see what kind of chip could be burned so the speedo is accurate.

The driveshaft for a 700r4 is the correct size for the T56 tranny in those trucks. It is proven to work by the boys over at www.fullsizechevy.com and 454ss.com

I have a 95 5 speed 350(now 383) and everything Vanilla said is correct accept for the speedo. You will probably have to recal the DRAC module (white little box by the computer behind the glove box) There is a write up on the internet for recaling it but the 95's DRAC is a little different but I figured it out. Hit me up when or if you do it and i'll give the info you need. It requires doing some calculations and re-soldering the circuit board. No real biggie though. If you have a bench seat you may have issues with the shifter clearing it. Camaro T56's use a TH350 yoke on the driveshaft and your dad's truck has a TH400 style. Not sure about the driveshaft length. The swap shouldn't be a big deal.
