Default G2 MAF Sensor for 2002 vortec 8.1

Alright, here is a boneheaded question. Will a G2 MAF sensor that is stated for all vortec motors V6 and V8 work for this even though it specifies it is only for a 1997-2000 year break. I already MUST send my computer off to Westers for re-programming anyway since this motor is going into a tube buggy rock crawler. Any suggestions, comments, etc?
