You loose compression from the 5.3 to the 243 heads because the 243 has a larger combustion chamber.

The 5.3 head has the smallest combustion chamber of any stock ls type head.
so i need to get them milled since they are going on a 5.3 correct? i was planning on getting the 243s, blower or not. and that was my plan was to have them milled 0.030 for the compression to come back to 9.5:1.

Yes. Unless you want to leave the compression, as is, after the swap.

I paid $400 for a hot tank, bead blast, 3-angle valve job, .030" mill, install BTR springs. A flat mill is $125. CA prices for everything are higher than most parts of the country, I'm sure.
