Default explain cooling lines, heater/overflow to motor

I just noticed today that the coolant line coming from the motor to the heater core is Y-ed off to the overflow tank also. What is the purpose of this? I am doing a 6.0l in a 68 chevy so I am wondering if I really need this or not.
Thanks.
