Did I handle this poorly or get ripped off or is this a common conversion price for this typd of job??

Thanks
Harness: $250-300
Adapters: $500
Engine: $2500
Trans: $1500-2000
Exhaust: $500-600
Intake: $150-200
Driveshaft: $400
Transfercase: $1000?
Fuel System: $1000
Misc bull$hit: $1500 +/-
Labor: you can never charge enough.....prob 60 hours x 65.00 3900.00

$13850.00 +/- 2500 would have been my estimate Sounds to me like you got a good deal....as long as it runs and performs as it should.

I agree, swaps NEVER go as smooth as you think they will and all the little stuff that is never thought about ADDS UP. Plus if a shop did it they have overhead to worry about if they want to stay in business.

Ebay has ruined the world.

Like I said, if he bought the parts brand new like I assume your prices above reflect but if he bought good used stuff with low miles:
Harness: $100
Adapters: $500(not sure)
Engine: $1000
Trans: $800
Exhaust:$0(he didn't say what kind of headers he's running)
Intake:$0(he didn't say he bought an intake)
Driveshaft: $200
Transfercase: $500
Fuel System: $0
Misc bull$hit: $$500
Labor: 20 hours at $100 an hour
----------------------------
Then the price cuts almost in half. Sorry, but $11 grand is rape unless everything you bought is BRAND new in crates. If not then I wouldn't have paid over $7000 and even that's on the high side.

I agree with Brian, This is a shop doing it, and there not LS specific, so there not going to know all the "hook up" to get smoking deals on parts. I'm sure most of the parts where bought new, and not found of message boards or eBay. They don't have time to spend "looking" for deals. Im in the middle of a similar type of swap (5.3 and 4l60 in a 4x4 72 Chevy truck) and I can tell you there is a LOT to it and it will shock you how much all that little crap you need will add up. Completely rework the fuel system and all the electrical. I think Brians estimate of 60 hours is LOW. This is a custom application everything has build or reworked. I think the price is a bit on the high side, but not out of line if it was a quality, PROFESSIONAL job. I'm sure a guy in his garage could have done it cheaper, but would have had to spend a lot more time looking for deals on parts.

You duplicate that build into that vehicle in a shop that is insured and pays rent with quality work that someone will stand behind for 7K and I will eat my shorts.

He did mention an air intake, thank god you dont work at the shop you would have forgotten to charge him, a quality custom driveshaft is going to be 300-400, remember this is a custom build, Exhaust is an estimate based on experiance....again, glad you do not work at the shop you would have under bid it. Find me an engine that is worth a **** with all the covers, coils and a water pump for 1000 and I will buy it...remember worth a **** in my eyes is different than yours since you obviously dont run a quality shop. Not sure what fuel system you think you can carry over from the vehicle, it is a low pressure sysytem and WILL NOT WORK...again my experiance shines and I realize this before we started the project so there are not any surprises....I am sure you know the cost of gaskets and misc BS since you obviously have done several of these swaps and know the cost at the top off your head....and if you can finish that entire job in 20 hours....thats less than a week... you are the top notch tech that I need in my shop, please call me for an interview, you are my randomhero

Until you know what you are talking about, keep your comments about getting raped to yourself.......Consider me a dick if you want, I am speaking from years of experiance and knowledge on this topic, and until you can prove to me that you have what it takes to do it.....shhhhh....

Thanks for all the repsonses. This gives me a better feel. The shop although not super LS specific does gaurantee the job. The engine tranny and t case, pcm and all accessories minus a starter was 3700 from a 2004 K2500HD. I had to get a custom harness and a tune of course. New custom drive shafts and exhaust. Fuel pump, and lines had to be replaced and all parts were new.

My mechanic was great with the major stuff but was not so good with wiring so by the time he was done even with the custom harness he had like 110 hours of labor into the job. Course with a truck like this nothing is standard. Good news is they dropped the rate so it was like 32 bucks and hour for the job.

Truck runs great. I was amazed as to how many things came up that I didn't think about that had to be modified like oil/tranny cooler lines lines, sensors for my guages and so forth. It didn't help that the truck was poorly wired and labeled to begin with.

The body conversion is from Gamit Design in SLC UT and my brother and I did most of that ourselves.

Sweet, all that matters is exactly what you stated....they will stand begind the work, and you are happy with the outcome. Dont let anyone fool you, obviously if you did the orginal body conversion you know about surprises and costs.....IMPHO you got a good deal on the work, parts and labor.

just my 2 cents ..... on swaping into older bodied chevy's ..... i have a shitload of hours -waste- in stupid things just so when the hood goes up it looks like the engine is supposed to be there. stupid things like this ...... is what you have to deal with.....

other stupid things like the dipstick hits the passenger side head because it sits further back on the block compared to old small blocks.

i think 3500 or so for labor charge is a fair. and 20 hours is a bit low, i have 3 or so hours in just cleaning the engine for paint .... even thought it didnt need an imron paint job and the valve covers didnt need metallic pearl, it still needed to be cleaned for the install,

my hourly break down: remember im only averagley skilled and 80 percent of this has been done bymyself and in my driveway because i lost the lease to my garage where is started on the truck

also i am only about half done with this install.....

-engine removal and clean up - 4 hours
-New Engine prep (through inside clean of
old oils from pan and check gaskets and cam install) - 5 hours
-Engine Install 2 people - 4 hours (8 man hours)
-Removal of old fuel system(dual tanks) - 5 hours
-New Fuel System Install - 8 Hours
-Old wiring removal - 1.5 hours
-New wiring (in process) and still have 3 hours in it, about 1.5 left for fans and fuel pump and the relays and whatnot

im done..... went way longer then i wanted to but just wanted to compare situations...

again

my 2 cents
